Based in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S., W.B. Sims and his award-winning band (unofficially called the “Crawdaddies”) are known for their high-energy, fun-loving performances. Oh, and Sims also happens to be a past Key Club International president! A member from the Alabama District, he served as president during the 2017-18 year.
Although officially a country artist whose original songs include “Have I Met You Before” and “Ghost in the Room,” Sims covers everything from George Strait to T-Pain — with banjo riffs thrown in. Three-time Paralympian Evan Austin competed on the U.S. swim team at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and as team captain at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where he won a gold and a bronze medal. He hopes to compete in his fourth Paralympics in Paris this July.
As with any world-class athlete, Austin’s journey to the podiums and beyond required years of dedication, training and overcoming challenges. He was born with familial spastic paraparesis, an inherited genetic neurological disorder that impacts the function and control of his legs and feet. To improve his quality of life, he has undergone numerous surgeries, rigorous physical therapy sessions and demanding rehabilitation efforts.
At 10, he fell in love with the sport of swimming, where both the successes and failures he experienced enabled him to grow as an athlete and a person. In addition to his athletic triumphs, he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and sport management from Indiana State University, and today he serves as a volunteer assistant on the coaching staff for the Purdue University swimming and diving team.
During Opening Session at the 2024 Key Club International Convention, Austin will share how you can overcome the roadblocks and deterrents on your life’s journey and achieve your own personal victories.
Since capturing the world’s attention and winning gold and silver medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Laurie Hernandez has continued to inspire and impress.
Following her Olympic success, Laurie won the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” Season 23. In 2017, she published her first New York Times Best Sellers book titled, “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond,” sharing her journey and motivating countless readers with her story of determination and triumph.
Laurie didn’t stop there. In 2018, she released a children’s picture book, “She’s Got This,” which also became a New York Times Best Seller. Through this book and her role as KPMG’s Literacy Champion, Laurie has promoted readership as a vital path to leadership, encouraging young minds to embrace the power of reading.
In recognition of her impact and influence, Mattel honored Laurie by creating a Laurie Hernandez “Shero” Barbie, celebrating her as a role model for young girls everywhere.
Laurie’s career highlights are numerous and distinguished. She served as a gymnastics analyst for NBC during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and will continue in this role for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Her accolades extend beyond sports. She received the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence and was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2019. Her influence is recognized by multiple Nickelodeon Kids Choice Sports awards, an ESPY nomination, and many more honors that highlight her impact both within and outside the gymnastics community.
Laurie is also a dedicated student, currently studying drama at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where she pursues her passion for acting.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Laurie is a fierce advocate for mental health. She partners with various campaigns and initiatives, encouraging support and awareness for mental health issues and inspiring others to prioritize their well-being.
Laurie began supporting UNICEF USA in 2018 when she used her social media platforms to call out for a child’s rights to be safe and protected above issues of party and politics; since then, she has consistently used her social platforms to support UNICEF USA’s goal of creating a more equitable world for every child.
In 2023, Laurie was named a UNICEF Global Ambassador.
“We are thrilled to welcome Laurie Hernandez to our family of UNICEF USA Ambassadors,” said Chief Marketing Officer of UNICEF USA, Shelley Diamond. “Since her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016, Laurie has proven to be a positive role model for children and adults alike and has become an outspoken advocate for children’s rights. On World Refugee Day, it is particularly powerful for Laurie to give a voice to children on the move and to help ensure all children are healthy, educated, protected and respected.”
