Electric guitars, stage lights, microphones and amps. Key Clubs in New England District 9 and 10 partnered with the Kiwanis Club of Manchester, New Hampshire, and held its first K Rocks! Battle of the Bands event in March, raising more than US$500 for their clubs!
K Rocks! Battle of the Bands was an opportunity for Key Clubbers and their classmates in garage rock bands to perform on a real stage with professional lights and sound and compete for US$1,000 worth of prizes, including gift certificates and studio time at a performing arts center.
Sixty-two Key Clubbers volunteered side-by-side with Kiwanians to pull off the event. Nine bands battled it out onstage, with professional bands from around the area who volunteered to perform in-between sets. A panel of four local celebrities judged the contest, and a popular newspaper columnist was the emcee.
Key Clubbers were outfitted in specially designed T-shirts and were involved with all aspects of the event including security, selling refreshments and coordinating backstage operations. Key Clubbers got their classmates involved by holding a design contest intended to develop the artistic talents of students for the event’s logo.
Still Well Angel, a Boston-based metal band, provided all back-line equipment and technical support throughout the competition.
The alternative rock band “Figure 8” took first place honors, followed by “In the Summer” and “Mr. Squid.” All participants left with prizes and T-shirts, and great memories of their day on the big stage.
