  • It’s a zoo out there

Hall High School Key Club members complete a service project at the Little Rock Zoo during Kiwanis One Day.

Kiwanis-family members from all over the world participated in Kiwanis One Day, a day of global community service, on April 4. During this annual event Kiwanians give more than a million volunteer hours in a single day to improve their communities and the lives of children in countless nations.

As part of Kiwanis One Day on April 4, 2009, members of the Hall High School Key Club and North Little Rock East Campus Key Club joined members of the Kiwanis Club of Pulaski Heights in a service project at the Little Rock Zoo in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Work included spreading new mulch, painting a gazebo, washing playground equipment and planting shrubs in the Kiwanis Kids Corner, which was given to the zoo by the Kiwanis Club of Pulaski Heights in 2001.

  • Locking out AIDS

A dance group performs during Key Club District of Jamaica's "Lock It, The AIDS Charity Concert" event. On March 5 2009, the Key Club District of Jamaica, in association with the University of Technology’s Circle K International club hosted the first ever Key Club District of Jamaica concert. The event themed: “Lock It, The AIDS Charity Concert,” was held at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium on the university’s campus. The concert was a part of an ongoing initiative of District Governor Shari-Ann Baker to educate and make a significant impact on the lives of the youth in Jamaica, in regards to HIV and AIDS.

The Caribbean is ranked second in the world for HIV/AIDS prevalence and sixth in the world for HIV/AIDS mortality. Baker, realizing the need for more HIV/AIDS awareness and showing a genuine desire to make an impact on the lives of youth, decided to carry out a year-long AIDS awareness campaign. The campaign included fundraisers, such as a tag drive, and finally took the form of the district concert.

The concert began with an opening address by the Allana Ingram, International Trustee from Jamaica. After the address, the event consisted of a series of entertainment presentations including a fashion show and a thrilling performance by the dance group Sashe Empire.

  • Friday night festivities

Minot High Central Campus Key Club members staff a bowling ball game during elementary school fun night. Many teenagers spend their Friday nights hanging out with friends, grabbing a bite to eat or watching a movie. Recently, 26 members from the Minot High Central Campus Key Club in Minot, North Dakota, chose to do something different.

They spent two Friday nights in February helping out at local elementary school fun nights, putting in about 60 hours of service to their community, while at the same time having fun with their friends. Members volunteered at the concession stand making popcorn and cotton candy, and were in charge of the snack walk and ring toss. In the end, everyone—kids, Key Clubbers, even a few parents—had an awesome time.
